PORTLAND, ME., October 21, 2008 -- Addison Woolley is pleased to host an exhibit and celebration of the December 2008 publication of ODIN STONE by one of Maine’s leading large format photographers, Tillman Crane. This third collection of Crane’s beautiful, dramatic, sometimes haunting images focuses on the Orkney Islands, an archipelago of nearly seventy islands, on the northern border of Scotland. Containing 48 meticulous reproductions of the original platinum palladium photographs, this book is being released in a limited edition of five hundred copies, each signed and numbered by the artist. All 48 photographs will be on view in the gallery.

Surrounded by the power of the North Sea, these islands retain a touch of mystery through the combined cultural history of over 5000 years. Orkney is home to a vibrant modern community, superimposed on the surviving architecture of the Neolithic, Iron Age, Norse, Medieval, Feudal and Monastic periods. Less than one hundred years ago, fishing and farming were the mainstays of life, yet today, many Orcadians are fishermen with farms, farmers with boats, and find themselves juggling other jobs to keep their families on the islands. Though the almost treeless landscape may differ from our own, there are many parallels that can be drawn between the Orkneys and our own Maine islands.

Crane first visited Scotland in 2002 when he was invited to speak at the spring meeting of the Royal Photographic Society of Edinburgh. Since that time he has made nine extended trips, teaching workshops, private tutorials and making photographs. His second book, TOUCHSTONES, was a monograph of images from all over Scotland. Published in 2005, it sold out a year later.

With an opening reception on November 7, 2008 from 5 – 8 p.m. the ODIN STONE photographs will be shown for the first time at the Addison Woolley Gallery, 87 Market Street, Portland ME. The exhibit runs from November 5th - 29th.

Crane will give an Artist Talk on November 14th, from 5 – 7 p.m. For more information, contact the gallery at: 207-775-0678 or www.addisonwoolley.com.
